Preeze Plant

The Preeze Plant is an aquatic fruit-bearing organism that produces Preezes, found exclusively within the Sinitic-Myale Swamp, where it grows in lakes defined by consistently cold temperatures. These environmental conditions are essential not only for the plant’s survival, but also for maintaining the structural stability of its fruit.

The plant consists of three distinct layers, each serving a specialized biological function. The first layer is a broad, leaf-like structure that floats at the water’s surface. From this leaf, one or more stems may grow. As these stems develop, they generate small air bubbles that are guided toward the center of the leaf, forcing it to curve upward and trap the air beneath. This trapped air allows the plant to remain buoyant and drift across the water. Typically, only a single stem forms, though multiple stems can develop. If too many emerge simultaneously, their combined weight can exceed the structural limits of the leaf, causing it to tear. When this happens, the stems are damaged and the plant sinks to the bottom of the lake.

The second layer is the stem, which displays a distinct golden coloration. While the fruit itself is edible, the stem contains harmful but non-lethal toxins that can cause nausea, numbness, and digestive discomfort if ingested or mishandled. Beyond its defensive function, the stem also acts as a perennial regeneration node. As long as the stem remains intact, it can regenerate a new fruit by absorbing dissolved minerals from the surrounding water, even after the previous fruit has been harvested.

The third and final layer is the fruit itself, a purple structure that grows from a mouth-like opening at the base of the stem. The fruit consists of a thermally unstable biological gel, whose structure is maintained by a pectin–alginate–like polysaccharide network, stabilized through cross-linking with dissolved mineral ions. Growing underwater preserves its form through hydration, pressure, and mineral support. Even so, the fruit remains highly temperature-sensitive; slight increases in temperature cause the gel matrix to destabilize, resulting in the fruit gradually collapsing into liquid. Once harvested, Preezes are stored in extremely cold, moisture-controlled environments to maintain their structure.

Preezes are best consumed underwater immediately after harvest, or shortly after being removed from a chilled environment. Their flavor is mildly sweet with an exceptionally high water content, resembling several fruits found across multiple worlds. Comparable examples include the Pear of Earth, Kalda of Pyrhh, Jeltik of Myalga, List of Satari, Miyl of Keravisi, and the Varaan of Odyra. While Preezes are primarily valued in their solid form, some industries deliberately allow them to liquefy and sell them as a specialty juice.
