Blantyn
The Blantyn is considered a rare sight, despite existing in great numbers throughout the Molonari Caves. They are most commonly found at the bottom of Lake Korun Kalkin, where they use the light emitted from their eyes to lure unsuspecting prey through the darkness. When a Blantyn is born, it typically possesses only two or three eyes. As it matures, additional eyes begin to develop across its body, each capable of producing light and generating energy. However, this growth increases its need for sustenance, driving older individuals to hunt more aggressively. Similar to the anglerfish of Earth or the Kinvivad of Odyra, the Blantyn’s eyes host microscopic glowing bacteria known as Photobacterium. This symbiotic relationship allows the bacteria to thrive while the Blantyn benefits from their illumination to capture prey. Despite their effectiveness, they remain vulnerable to larger predators drawn to their glow.
Blantyn are relatively small Estalons, reaching a maximum length of 30 centimeters. Despite their size, they play a crucial role in the city of Grûat, where light energy is essential. During nighttime, massive water tanks filled with hundreds of Blantyn are used to harvest energy from their collective glow. Individually, their light is faint, but together they produce enough energy to power significant parts of the city. Due to controlled breeding programs, their population remains stable. However, controversy exists, as the replacement process is considered inhumane. Every 115 days~, newborn Blantyn are introduced into the tanks, where they consume older individuals and take their place, continuing an unsettling cycle of renewal.
