Stegorix
Stegorix are fox-like Estalons distinguished by the large, protective plates that line their backs, a feature that earned them the scientific name Vulpes Stenops. These small, predatory creatures are known for their friendliness toward Humans and most other Eldranes and are commonly kept by farmers as natural pest control to ward off rodents. Native to the Resnim Forest near the Savannah, their coloration reflects the need for camouflage, blending seamlessly with the forest’s red-toned trees as they age. Interestingly, while most recorded births have occurred in the Savannah, the species now thrives deeper within forested regions, suggesting a gradual migration that has influenced their pigmentation. Stegorix pups are born a soft sunset orange, gradually shifting to a rich blood-red hue in adulthood. The spots that appear across their bodies over time are believed to be an evolutionary adaptation, mimicking the appearance of young wolves to deter their natural predator, the Rolofis.
These Estalons grow to an average height of about 55 centimeters from head to toe, but their size is deceptive. They possess extremely acute hearing, capable of detecting even the faintest snap of a twig. Their diet primarily consists of small rodents and insects such as Shelpons and Cerescops, though they have also been observed taking down fish equal to or even larger than themselves. Despite being a different species, Stegorix often share large underground tunnel systems with Salamander Foxpups. The Foxpups excavate and maintain these tunnels, while the Stegorix contribute by providing food, forming a unique symbiotic relationship. Outside of this cooperation, interaction between the two species appears limited, though they remain non-hostile. Attempts to study these tunnels have repeatedly failed, as all recording equipment placed inside is mysteriously relocated to the surface within minutes.
